Scott Asher: Winning While Building Character

On the website that overviews Arrowhead’s soccer programs, there is a motto developed by a former coach that says, “Working on championships while building character.”

Varsity girls soccer coach Scott Asher says that means it’s the high school’s mission to not only produce good players, but good people as well.

One way Asher’s players turned this saying into action is through fundraising and community-service projects. The girls in his program worked to raise more than $12,000 over the past few years for multiple-sclerosis programs.

“If we’re winning on the field, we better be doing just as good, if not better, off it,” Asher says. “I don’t know if that’s being hammered home at every other high school you go to. It’s an expectation at Arrowhead. Because your school is attached to your team, you have to act properly.

“If we can leave them with skills that help them be successful, reliable and trustworthy people, those things last a lot longer than winning championships.”
