September’s Coach And Athletic Director features our first in-depth look at the inner workings of one of the nation’s top athletic departments. But readers don’t have to wait for the issue to catch a glimpse at Wisconsin’s Arrowhead High School.

The Arrowhead football team on Friday, Aug. 24, faces Minnetonka, Minn., on ESPN3—the school’s first national television appearance. Coach And Athletic Director this summer visited Arrowhead with more than a dozen editors and photographers, profiling the athletic department and its coaches. The result was a 40-page report that breaks down program management, handling budgets, facility renovations and other tasks handled by the department.

In addition to the magazine report, Coach And Athletic Director produced a web series featuring 50 videos sponsored by A4. The company manufactures and provides apparel to more than eight million on-field athletes annually.

“This type of project never has been done in the scholastic-sports industry,” says Michael Austin, editor-in-chief at Coach And Athletic Director. “With more than 80 years in the business, Coach And Athletic Director is the perfect fit for a top-to-bottom breakdown of a successful high school athletic program.

“Arrowhead is the perfect choice for this endeavor. Activities director Kevin Flegner opened the doors to every aspect of his department, and the coaches and administrators we interviewed provided us everything we needed and then some. It’s no wonder Arrowhead is one of the most successful athletic programs in the country.”

Kickoff for Arrowhead’s game against Minnetonka is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST. Arrowhead won state football titles in 1993, 1994, 1996 and 2007. Head coach Greg Malling enters his second year with the program, leading the Warhawks in 2011 to an 8-2 record and the second round of the state tournament.

Over the last four years, Arrowhead spent $2.7 million on facilities renovations that included upgrades to the football/track stadium, press boxes and luxury suites.
