Northwestern University athletic director Jim Phillips believes unionization is not the answer but said Tuesday that college student-athletes deserve a vote regarding issues that affect them.

Phillips said unionization “goes against all that is what we believe is right in the landscape of college athletics,” according to the Associated Press. Kain Colter, a former quarterback for the football team at Northwestern University, has led the charge to unionize athletes. The issue is currently before the National Labor Relations Board.

Phillips said there must be changes that give student-athletes more of a say.

Big Ten athletic directors gather this week for the conference’s spring meetings.
