Schutt Sports Responds To Helmet Patent-Infringement Lawsuit Verdict

In the wake of a federal court's $30 million dollar decision that Schutt Sports, Inc.'s DNA and ION football helmets infringed the concussion-reduction technology features of the Riddell Revolution family of football helmets, Schutt Sports company spokesman, Glenn Beckmann, issued the following statement to Coach & Athletic Director:

As the legal process continues in this lawsuit, we are going to remain focused and dedicated to our fundamental business of making the best performance and protective equipment in football. The court has ruled that the ear flap of certain Schutt helmets infringe Riddell’s jaw flap patents. Three additional claims brought by Riddell were rejected by the court on summary judgment.

Despite information released publicly already, the final conclusion of this trial has not been reached, as the judge has not signed off on the damage award, nor has she ruled on our motion for judgment as a matter of law that our products do not infringe on the jaw flap claims of Riddell’s patents.

Obviously, we are disappointed in this jury’s verdict and we will pursue all available legal options, including post trial motions and appeal, as we strongly believe the evidence presented in this case supports our position that we do not infringe the jaw flap claims of Riddell’s patents.

This lawsuit and verdict have no effect on our ability to provide the best performance helmets on the market. Our TPU Cushioning System is the primary reason our helmets are penetrating further into the NFL market than ever before and our standing as the world’s No. 1 maker of football helmets is not diminished by this ruling.

We can easily modify the shape of the plastic ear flap on our DNA and ION helmet shells, if directed to do so by the court.

While impacts from the front or side are traditionally thought of as the prime mover in concussions many times they completely leave out on of the major areas...your jaw. It has been shown time and again that proper mouthpieces have helped to distribute the impact forces throughout the area to lessen the chance of a concussion. I applaud these types of studies as they help us understand the forces and what is necessary for protection but they are not nearly enough to give a detailed and definitive account.

Guess What! X1 will do the job better than Schutt or Riddell!

Ever since I talked my Riddell minded boss into DNA's he has pointed out to me every time one of our helmets comes off in a game. The past few seasons I have noticed many more REVO's coming off on impact then DNAs
This ruling is a joke!

Anyone who's worn both the Revo and DNA will know the Schutt helmet technology is totally different, more advanced and much safer. FACT!

The Schutt helmets have been used in my community for many years with good reason...they are the best for protection. Too bad Riddell had to lower thier standards by complaining over the jaw plastic. The helmet and protection as a whole was never in question and no doubt Schutt wins out in protection

Schutt Helmets are, and will continue to be better protection than Riddell. If you haven't worn a Schutt, you are missing out.
Riddell vs Schutt

The Schutt is so good that they lost $30,000,000 for stealing Riddell technology!
Riddell

It is funny to me that any adult would allow children to dictate what they want to wear. The Riddell name has been at the head of the class since 1979 in my mind. The PAC3 revolutionized the helmet market. The NFL and most major colleges wear Riddell, heck PSU just threw their IONs in the trash and their team Dr. is on the schutt board of directors! Schutt will go the way of Bike, Maxpro, MacGregor, Air, Zenith and Adams. This isn't baseball folks... Safety is the priority!

This should be a both and situation instead of an either or one. I order both because of player preference. I have been coaching for 40 years and find both very safe helmets.

Our Program uses the DNA, our youth group uses the Revo. By far, The DNA has had a significant reduction in concussions. Our staff is and AD feel strongly the DNA is the safer product

I only use the Shutt DNA. I don't like the Riddell Revolution. We don't see them as being the same at all. My players who I had try the Revolution told me they preferred the DNA.

I have both helmets for my program, I think they are both great in keeping my team safe. I know you are 2 different companies but why can't you work together to build a great helmet. Just a thought
