Men’s and women’s lacrosse will be added as varsity sports at Michigan, a source familiar with the situation told The Detroit News on Tuesday.

Both currently are club teams at Michigan.

The men will begin playing a varsity schedule in 2011-12, the women in 2012-13.

U-M athletic director Dave Brandon called a press conference for noon Wednesday for an announcement regarding Michigan athletics.

Denver coach Bill Tierney indicated that Michigan would compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference in lacrosse, joining Ohio State, Air Force, Loyola (Md.), Fairfield, Hobart and Bellarmine, as well as Denver.

“It’s really exciting for us to have a great school like that, a great athletic department like that involved in our league,” Tierney was quoted as saying on greatlaxstate.com, regarding Michigan.
